The first holiday we spent together as a married couple, my husband and I went shopping to find an ornament to put on our first tree together. Finding an ornament quickly became our thing each year. Post-kids, this "tradition" has evolved. Rather than going shopping to find "our" ornament of the year, we've turned this into a craft activity that I do with the kids to get into the holiday spirit. So now, along with getting our Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving and decorating our house (both inside and out), we make 3 - 4 ornaments to go on the tree.
I don't sew very well nor am I the most crafty of people, so it really has to be something simple. It's really amazing what you can do with a glue gun, some paint, felt, and accessories ...
Because the last few years I've become obsessed with making felt ornaments (great for hiding mistakes), another "tradition" has grown as an off-shoot ... the girls get a plushie of the same design as the ornament in their stocking.

What fun to have these kinds of traditions. When we had our kids we started taking them to get special ornaments each year so that when they leave the nest they will have their own ornaments and can have a beautiful tree of their own.
